Valganciclovir is an antiviral agent that prevents viral proliferation in the body. It is usedin the treatment of in AIDS patients and prevent cytomegalovirus in patients who have had organtransplants.Determination of drug concentration plays a major role in controlling the quality ofthe drug and has a significant impact on overall health. Some methods for determination of drugconcentration based on the use of chromatographic techniques such as HPLC and LC/MS havebeen reported for the determination of VAL. Most of these methods are tedious and timeconsuming involving derivatization with Chloroacetaldehyde, complex sample preparation bysolid-phase extraction, and other methods of extraction prior to final analysis. Electrochemicalsensors have found wide applications in medical, biological and environmental fields due to theirexcellent sensitivity, rapid response, simplicity, low cost and in vivo detection. Metals in thenanometer range provide three important functions for electroanalysis: the roughening of theconductive sensing interface, catalytic properties, and conductivity properties. Nanowires havemany interesting properties that are not seen in bulk or 3D materials. This is due to electrons innanowires are quantum confined laterally and thus occupy energy levels that are different fromthe traditional continuum of energy levels or bands found in bulk materials.Peculiar features ofthis quantum confinement exhibited by certain nanowires such as carbon nanotubes manifestthemselves in discrete values of the electrical conductance. Such discrete values arise from aquantum mechanical restraint on the number of electrons that can travel through the wire at thenanometer scale.A sensitive electrochemical method for determination of Valganciclovir isdeveloped using a Ni-Co multilayer nanowire modified carbon paste electrode. The effects ofscan rate and pH on electrode response were investigated. Operational parameters have beenoptimized. Vast linear range with low detection limit were achieved. The method was thensuccessfully used for the determination of valganciclovir in some real samples including tabletsand human serum.
