چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: To evaluate the effects of supplementation with L-carnitine on oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Methods: Sixty-three CAD patients were randomly allocated to two groups: L-carnitine (1000 mg /day) and placebo. The intervention period was 3 months. Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitrotyrosine (NT) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were used as oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers. Results: In patients who had received L-carnitine for 3 months serum, levels of MPO (p = 0.41), NT (p = 0.004) and hs-CRP (p <0.001) decreased while levels of TAC increased (p = 0.001) significantly. Also, in this study, a significant difference between the two groups in terms of changes in hs-CRP (p =0.001), MPO (p = 0.008), NT (p <0.001) and TAC (p = 0.011) was observed. Conclusion: L-carnitine supplementation of the diets of CAD patients may attenuate oxidative and inflammatory damages.
