FAST FOOD AND SOFT DRINK CONSUMPTION IN PEOPLE REFERRING TO THE DIETICIAN IN THE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH SERVICES CENTER OF SHIRAZ

Background and Aim: The development of technology in recent decades has brought lots of changes in people’s lifestyle and even their consumption of fast food. It has resulted in a dramatic increase in the consumption of fast food and soft drink. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 510 People were referred to the dietician by family medicine centers. They were asked about the frequency of soft drink and fast food consumption. Those using more than once a month were considered to have inappropriate nutrition patterns and they were consulted by the dietician.Results: The young group of 18-30 year olds had the highest rate of fast food consumption (52%) among the rest of the age groups. The fast food consumption was 41.6%, 20%, and 8% in the age groups of adolescent, middle age and elderly, respectively. The consumption of soft drink was also significantly higher in the youth Group and subsequently, adolescents, middle-aged and elderly adults consumed the most soft drinks. After the nutrition consultation, the inappropriate patterns of fast food and soft drink consumption were significantly reduced by 86.1 percent.Conclusion: Inappropriate fast food and soft drink consumption had a high rate. Therefore it is very important to take action in order to identify the people at risk, and then provide them with consultation and advice, since nutrition consulting can significantly improve nutrition patterns
