چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim: Hesperidin is a flavonone that is originally found in citrus fruits and has been investigated to have an inverse association with chronic inflammation, although the results might be prone to inconsistency. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of hesperidin in reducing chronic inflammation. Methods: The databases PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with no restriction to language or calendar date. A random effect meta-analysis was used to compare the levels of inflammatory markers between subjects consumed hesperidin and controls. Results: Six eligible RCTs with 296 participants were included in the present meta-analysis. Our findings suggested that hesperidin significantly reduces V-CAM levels [weighted mean difference (WMD) = -22.81 ng/ml, 95% confidence interval (CI): -44.70, -0.92, P = 0.041]. Although the overall pooled estimate showed no considerable changes of CRP levels following hesperidin supplementation, a significant reduction was observed in studies with a parallel design (WMD = -0.72 mg/l, 95% CI: -1.35, -0.09, P = 0.024) and with the duration of more than 4 weeks (WMD = -0.76 mg/l, 95% CI: -1.39, -0.12, P = 0.020). Moreover, there was no signification association between hesperidin consumption and E-selectin, IL-6, and I-CAM levels. Conclusion: The present study suggests that although hesperidin supplementation can successfully reduce some of the inflammatory markers, our results do not provide strong support for the beneficial effects of hesperidin on inflammation. Therefore, further investigation is required.
