KNOWLEDGE OF IRANIAN HOUSEHOLDS TOWARDS DIETARY FIBER IN 1390

Background and Aim: Dietary fiber is kind of critical nutrient for many purposes in human body. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of Iranian households about dietary fiber. Methods: in this cross sectional study, among 31 provinces, 14336 cases were randomly selected per province by clustered sampling method through 57 clusters, including 8 members meaning 456 participants in each. The data was gathered using a structured questionnaire by trained questioners and then analyzed using proper statistical methods by SPSS statistic software.Results: 12.25% of population were aware of dietary fiber role as an indigestible nutrient which helps to digestion of other food components OR (11.14-13.46). 10.16% of participants had knowledge about fruits as a source of fiber OR (9.15-11.26) and 18.76% considered vegetables as a valuable source OR (17.29-20.32). Biological role of fiber against cancers, especial diseases, digestive system motion and obesity prevention was knowledged by 26.12 % OR (22.56-30.02), 24.02 % OR (21.01-27.31), 58.85% OR(54.36-63.21) and 26.12% OR(22.26-30.39) respectively.Conclusion: According to this study it is concluded that, only less than 30% of Iranian households are aware of effect of dietary fiber on obesity and diseases prevention. Furthermore a majority of participants are unfamiliar with the dietary fiber and even if it is well known, the vital roles remain unknown.
