RELATIONSHIP OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INTAKE AND ITS SUBGROUPS WITH ANXIETY IN WOMEN REFERRED TO HEALTH CENTERS OF KHORRAMABAD

Background and Aim: The association of fruits and vegetables (FV) and their subgroups consumption with anxiety has been studied in limited studies. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between intake of FV and their subgroups with anxiety. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 400 women aged 20-49 who were randomly selected from the Khorramabad health centers were interviewed. For nutritional evaluations, the 147-item food frequency questionnaire was used and to survey the status of anxiety from a short form of the DASS questionnaire. A short form of the questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess the physical activity. Anthropometric measurements including weight and height were also measured. The fruits were grouped into three groups of citrus, berries and other fruits, and vegetables were divided into four groups of cruciferous vegetables, dark yellow vegetables, green leafy vegetables and other vegetables. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16.Results: After adjustment for confounding variables, those in the lowest quartile of total FV, total vegetables, total fruits, citrus and other fruits intake had higher odds of anxiety than those in the highest quartile (p trend<0.04). Conclusion: This study shows the importance of consumption FV and several subgroups of it in the risk of anxiety.
