چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Current evidence showed that dietary fiber may have favorable effect in hemodialysis patients. However, there is no study regarding the association between fiber intake and sleep quality, a component of quality of life, in these patients. To determine association between fiber intake and sleep quality in hemodialysis patientsMethods: In this cross-sectional study, 168 patients with ≥1-year history of dialysis (at least 2 to 3 times per week) were selected based on the convenience sampling method. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. Sleep quality was measured using the PSQI sleep quality questionnaire. Data reported as mean±SD.Results: In primary analysis, mean total fiber intake (19.54 ± 14.21) was not significantly correlated with sleep quality (r = -0.062, p = 0.44). Similarly, soluble fiber had no relation with sleep quality (r=0.077, p=0.34). In contrast, insoluble fiber had a significant association with better sleep quality (r= -0.173, p=0.03). After adjusting for confounders including gender, age, socioeconomic status, disease history and dialysis quality, a significant positive relationship was seen between insoluble fiber and better sleep quality (r = -0.169, p = 0.04). There was no significant relationship between total fiber and soluble fiber intake with sleep quality in multivariate adjusted model (total fiber: r = -0.009, p = 0.92, soluble fiber: r = 0.143, p= 0.09)Conclusion: A positive relation between insoluble fiber and better sleep quality was observed in hemodialysis patients. However, more studies should be conducted, especially regarding beneficial effects of dietary fibers and phosphorus homeostasis.
