چکیده مقاله:

Introduction and Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing threat for human health. Companion animals are considered as one of the reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant bacteria; these bacteria may be transferred to human by direct contact or consumption of contaminated food, indirectly. Escherichia coli, as a predominant commensal microorganism in the gastrointestinal microflora, play an important role in transmission of some resistance and virulence traits to other pathogens among various hosts. Therefore the aim of this study is evaluation of phenotypic resistance against human antibiotics in E. coli strains isolated from horses in Kerman.Materials and Methods: A total number of 59 fecal samples from horses were collected in the Kerman province, Iran. Antimicrobial resistance against seven human antibacterial agents was studied by disc diffusion method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute‟s guidelines (CLSI 2016).Results: Totally, 118 E. coli strains were isolated from the equine samples. While the most prevalent antibiotic resistance were recorded against amoxicillin clavulanic acid (54.3%), the lowest frequency rates of resistance were against trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole and gentamicin (16.9%). Resistance to ceftriaxone (36.5%), amikacin (26.3%), streptomycin (24.6%) and cefazolin (22%) was considerable, too.85Conclusion: Horses in Kerman can be considered as a reservoir of resistance against human antibiotics for the people which are living or in contact with these animals. Therefore improvement of animal management to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance transmission is necessary.
