Investigation of antibacterial effect of platelet rich plasma in different platelet count against psudomonas aeruginosa

Background: Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is one of the blood biomaterials that its anti-bacterial property against different bacteria have been shown in many studies (1-3). Different studies have reported various results of its antibacterial property against different gram positive and gram70negative bacteria. Many different methods of PRP preparation with different platelet count were reported. Since Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the antibiotic resistant bacteria and a major challenge in medicine, in this study we evaluated antibacterial property of PRP with different platelet count against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in comparison with platelet poor plasma (PPP).Materials and Methods: In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PTCC1214 were used and exposed with PPP and different dilutions of PRP on Mueller-Hinton Agar medium. PRP was prepared by the use of fresh blood of 10 healthy volunteers. PRP was prepared by single step method, then diluted to prepare PRP with different platelet count. 24hrs after exposure with bacteria, their antibacterial effect were analized. All the experiments were repeated three times. Results were analyzed by ANOVA.Results: According to the study, platelet rich plasma and platelet poor plasma have antibacterial property against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. But anti-bacterial effect of platelet rich plasma and platelet poor plasma were not significantly different with each other. (P = 0.78).Conclusion: Since we observed anti-bacterial property of plasma and PRP on these bacteria, this study can be a step to help treatment of bacterial infections and related wound healing.Keywords: Antibacterial effect; Psudomonas aeruginosa; Platelet Rich Plasma; Platelet Poor Plasma.
