Background and goals:Proper patient follow up and management can dramatically prevent cervical cancer speciallyin patients with epithelial cell abnormality. In the present study we follow those patients withASCUS on their pap smear for 10 years.Materials and Methods:100 consecutive patients who were diagnosed ASCUS in their pap smear reports 10 years agowere selected. After preparing proper questionair their follow up data were collected. Thedata including demographic characteristics, follow up pap smear results, any surgicalpathology results and progression or regression of ASCUS lesions. Then statistical analysisperformed and analyzed.Results:Overall fifteen patients (15%) have not follow up or correct address and eliminated from thestudy. Of remaining 85 patients 1 patient developed cervical cancer, 3 progressed to highgrade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and 15 Low grade (LSIL). Their cervicallesions were confirmed by surgical biopsy examination. Other 66 patients have not anyepithelial cell abnormality in the follow up. Most of them show squamous metaplasia in thefollow up pap smears.Discussion:Regular Pap smear is necessary for the prevention of cervical cancer. The proper follow upand management is mandatory specially in patients with any type of epithelial cellabnormality. In this study we found that about 15% of our patients have not any follow up orcorrect addresses and may be potentially refer with advanced lesions in the future.Conclusion: Gynecologists should complete the patients data on pap smear requisition formsand follow the patients properly specially in those with epithelial cell abnormality to preventcervical cancer.
