چکیده مقاله:

Introduction:About 20 to 30% of infertility problems in population is due to male factor infertility. Thereare some reports in favor of obesity in men as one of the factors affecting fertility. Thepresent study examines the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and semenparameters in 20- to 50- year-old Iranian men. Methods:All laboratory results of semen analysis of 640 non-vasectomy men who referred to 2 biglaboratories since November 2009 to January 2011 were collected. Data related to height, weight, BMI, age, sperm count, percentage of sperms having motility, percentage of spermswith normal morphology and percentage of viable sperms were recorded. Analysis of thesedata was performed using SPSS software. Results:The mean age of men and their mean BMI were 30.23 ± 5.9 and 26.03 ± 4.1 kg/m2,respectively. The parameters of semen analysis in individuals participating in the study wereas follows: total sperm count 53.71 ± 33.6 million; PH 8.17 ± 0.33; Normal spermmorphology 50.13 ± 10.9 percent; Viability 69.46 ± 12.6 percent; and Grade A motility 39.45± 16.8 percent. BMI does not correlate with any of the spermogram parameters includingsperm morphology, viability, PH, and motility. Age was neither related to any of the semenparameters. Conclusion:BMI does not correlate with any of the sperm parameters.
