Evaluating the Place of Typomorphological Approaches in Urban Development Plans in Iran, Case of Tabriz Metropolis

Almost a half century has passed since the approval of the first master plan in Iran and since then these plans have been frequently criticized. Despite some defensible positive subjests, their inefficacy has been largely proved. This research does not intend to evaluate and criticize all issues and matters of urban plans in Iran, but to find and study some specific issues related to typomorphological approaches amongst this plans, emphasizing the urban development plans presented for Tabriz metropolis. Typomorphology is an interdisciplinary field defined as the study of urban form derived from studies of typical spaces and structures.Urban forms happen to reflect the historical and cultural identity of a city and its citizens. Each society produces its own space, thus a social existence that has not produced its own space will eventually fail as a society.Urban development plans, as basic guidelines of space production are of importance, specially from a formal point of view. Therefore studies such as this very research are essential in order to identify the morphological criteria and formal fundamentals in development plans. The main question is: how have typomorphological aspects been dealt with in urban development plans in Iran Research Methodology This descriptive-comparitive research is based on a wide range of documentary studies consisting two parallel phases:a) Studying the main refrences of basic theories in the field of typomorphology and its applied aspects to explore the main ncepts,philosophical roots and etc.b) Studying the urban development plans of Iran (master plans, detailed plans and programs) putting emphasis on urban development plans presented for Tabriz metropolis, in order to explore and recognize the probable typomorphological considerations.The results of these two stages of study are then compared case by case to reach a logical-deductive conclusion at the end.Discussion and Results Three main steps are followed in this manner:3-1. Theoretical Framework This section of the paper comprises of three main titles as well:3-1-1. Definition of typomorphology and its three main schools Btirtish,Italian,French .3-1-2. Philosophical Bases of typomorphology, presenting some selected thoughts from Foucoult and Lefebvre as two important philosophers attempting to delinate some philosophical roots for urban ypomorphology.
