چکیده مقاله:
This Panel study is going to survey the effect of strategy-based reading instruction in ESP courses on the General English Proficiency of Non-English Field Iranian University students.The statistic subjects include 2oo students of Zirab payam-e –noor University in Mazandaran,120 girls and 80 boys, in different fields including; Accounting, Business Management, Etheology and Educational Planning. Mock Language Proficiency Test was used to check their level of language proficiency.Therefore, 120 subjects were chosen as a sample of studying. Based on Hatch and Farhady’s testing, the pre-Experimental design was selected. A researcher - made questionnaire, including 12 questions, has been used to check their language habits, their strength and weaknesses. After three terms of studying of ESP texts, the same language proficiency test has been given to themas a post test to see learners progrss. The obtained results indicates that at first, most subjects, learning English language through an authenticEsp. Texts had a disqualified performance in all language skills, listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, but at the end of the treatment it has shown that the Esp. texts are just increasing their vocabulary knowlege, which means the learners are not able to communicate verbally. They can only translate some Esp. texts somehow but not perfectly,which does not work in today s business, social,or even ordinary communicative atmosphere that much.Therefore,There is a big feeling of reforment and revision of the materials and their style of presentation in universities so that be able to end this big gap and help language learners to achieve their communicative goals.
