Facebook Use and Grammar Achievement: An Iranian Context

Social networking sites, as a category of web 2.0 technology, have been investigated by researchers in different contexts. In EFL contexts, the use of SNSs has been proven to be an effective way to promote language skills and components (Prichard, 2013). The present study is an attempt to explore the use of Facebook, as a popular SNS, in Iranian EFL classrooms. The aim is to examine the effect of using Facebook on grammar achievement of Iranian EFL students. 30 female students enrolled in a pre-intermediate EFL course in an institute in Karaj were selected and randomly divided into two groups namely experimental and control group. A pretest and a posttest were conducted before and after the treatment to collect data. In order to analyze data, an independent sample t-test was utilized. The results showed using Facebook has no significant effect on learners’ grammar achievement. The results were interpreted in the light of the core purposes of social networking sites and the social context of Iran.
