Predictors of Breast Self- Examination based on Protection Motivation Theory in Shahrekord Women

چکیده

Introduction: Breast cancer is one third of all kinds of cancers and the second reason of death in women. Prevention and screening can decrease affection and death rate. This cancer is one of the most important women s health issues in developing countries, but fortunately it is preventable and Breast Self- Examinations an effective screening method for prevention and early diagnosis of Breast cancer. This studyaimed to determine predictors of Breast Self- Examination in women in Shahrekord based on protection motivation theory. Method: This study was done as cross-sectional on 290 eligible women in Shahrekord city in 2016. The measurement tool was a questionnaire based on protection motivation theory. The questionnaires were completed as Self-report. To analyze the data, t-test, logistic regression and ANOVA were used. Results: There were statistically significant difference in the scores of protection motivation against Breast cancer (P=0.01), perceived self-efficacy (P=0.000), perceived response efficacy (P=0.008) and perceived severity (P=0.004) by history of doing Breast Self- Examination. Also, the perceived severity (OR=1.12) and perceived rewards (OR=0.90) were the statistically significant predictors of Breast Self- Examination in Shahrekord Women. Conclusion: The study results approved the protection motivation theory as a framework in predicting protective behavior of Breast Self- Examination among women
