چکیده مقاله:

Introduction and aim: Breast cancer, as a prevalent malignancy in women, has different annoying complications. Flushing caused by amenorrhea-induced chemotherapy affects more than 70% of patients. Hormone replacement-therapy is a therapeutic option for such patients but, it is contraindicated for this type of cancer. Diet therapy has shown a notable impact on various therapeutic approaches. So, it is sensible to examine this technique to prevent such a bothersome complication. This study was performedto check the efficacy of a Persian medicine derived regimen to reduce flushing in patients who take chemotherapy for breast cancer Methods: A pilot prospective study was done for 20 patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer during May to September 2016. All patients received a printed diet schedule based on traditional Persian medicine for 2 next weeks. They came to clinic at the end of the trial to fill in the forms asking about the symptoms of flushing, side effects and, their compliance during the treatment period. A visual analogue scale (VAS) score was also completed before and after the survey. Results: Most of the participants have been complied with the dietary instructions during the study phase. Frequency and duration of flushing-related pain in women who were taking chemotherapy due to breast cancer decreased significantly (p= 0.012) after the trial. VAS score showed a significant decline comparing to the beginning, too (p= 0.028). Conclusion: A Persian diet may resolve the symptoms of flushing in breast cancer patients although welldesigned, high powered randomized controlled trials with long-time follow up are necessary
