Various applications with different requirmentsare rapidly developed in the smart grid. The need to provideQuality of Service (QoS) for such a communicationnetwork is inevitable. However, recently a protocol calledRPL (Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network)has been standardized and is known as the main solution forlast mile communication network of smart grid. In thispaper, by studying the existing methods and identifying theshortcomings, we propose a customized version of RPLwhich we call OMC-RPL (Optimized Multi Class-RPL).Two principal advantages of the proposed method are: aholistic objective function including distinctive metricsrelated to QoS; and supporting the data classification whichis an important requirement in this context. The maincontribution of this paper is to make different objectivefunctions proportional to the number of classes by usingweighting parameters. The best values of these coefficientsare determined by an optimization algorithm. OMC-RPL isevaluated from different aspects. Simulation results showthat the new idea significantly decreases the end-to-enddelay and increases lifetime of the nodes that have limitedsource of energy. It seems that OMC-RPL could be a goodsubstitution for the available methods.
