چکیده مقاله:

Objective: Fish surgery predominantly used in ornamental fish but until recently surgery has not been applied routinely to fish in clinical practice. The advent of better surgical practices with fish can only be expected to improve the therapeutic value of fish surgery. As a result of the growing interest in surgical techniques for fish, we investigated two different types of sutures for use in goldfish. Method & Materials: Two different suture patterns (simple interrupted and interrupted horizontal mattress) were placed in skin and body wall of 18 goldfish (Carassius auratus). After two weeks all fish were killed humanly in euthanasia manner. The tissue reactions were evaluated by gross visual inspection and histological examination. Results & Conclusion: The superficial inflammatory reactions were graded on a scale from 0 (no inflammation) to 3 (severe inflammation). The interrupted horizontal mattress induced a severe inflammation (grade 3) but the simple interrupted suture induced moderate inflammation (grade 2) and in some cases a slightly mild inflammation (grade 1). The inflammatory response in histological examination was graded on a scale from 0 (no inflammatory response or normal skin tissue) to 5 (severe inflammatory response and necrosis). The interrupted horizontal mattress induced a moderately severe to severe inflammatory response and necrosis (grade 4 to 5) but the simple interrupted suture induced a moderate to moderately severe inflammatory response (grade 2 to 3). The simple interrupted suture induced a slightly mild and/or moderate adhesion in ventral cavity of fish but the interrupted horizontal mattress induced a moderate to severe adhesion in ventral cavity. Cross and histo-pathologic results indicated that the simple interrupted suture causes the least tissue reaction of two suture patterns examined.
