Filter Tensting : an Essential Aspect in Designing Filters for Embankment Dams

The important role of filter in earth and rockfill dam safety is highlighted. Some evidences cited from the literature along with NEF test results are presented which reveal that widely accepted filter design criteria are not universally safe for all soils. Filter testing id considered as a superior of filter design, especially in the case of problematic core materials or major projects. A detailed NEF testing procedure is devised and some of its salient features are elucidated.
