The effect of alternative assessment on internal motivation of foreign language learners

Motivation is necessary for language learning. The present study mainly aimed at investing the effect of using alternative assessment on internal motivation of university students majoring in English literature. The study followed a quasi-experimental design and included pre-test, treatment, post-test was in experimental andcontrol groups. Prior to treatment PET test was applied to homogenize the participants. Then motivation questionnaire was applied to measure the motivation of the learners at the beginning of the study. Later a 21- session treatment with alternative assessment system for the experimental group and conventional assessmentsystem for the control group was applied. At the end of the treatment period motivation questionnaire was givenonce more. The gathered data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests. The findings proved theeffectiveness of alternative assessments in increasing internal motivation of foreign language learners. This finding can have useful implications for language learners, teachers, and curriculum developers
