Investigation of Role of COCA in Improvement of Quality of News Translation from Farsi into English A Study Based on Corpus of Contemporary American English

This paper reports a detailed analysis of quality of news translations carried out by consulting Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) from Farsi into English. To this end, 11 graduate students of English Translation Studies from University of Isfahan were trained how to apply COCA in their translation tasks and then were asked to translate three pieces of news on International Policies first without COCA and then, after a one-month interval, to translate the same news with COCA. Their translations were rated by four American native speakers of English who were asked to determine the quality of the translations based on a holistic rubric devised by Waddington (2111). The two sets of scores of translations showed that consulting COCA when translating from Farsi into English can significantly improve the quality of the news translations. The findings of this study have important implications for translators, translator trainers, material developers and curriculum designers.
