Investigation of Marked Thematic Structures in Translating English Litrary Texts in to Persian

Thematic structures, more especially marked thematic structures play a fundamental role in the reproduction of an equivalent in the discourse through translation.The present study was desiged to investigate the extent of equivalence between English litrary texts and their persion translations in terms of marked thematic structure . For the purpose of this study, three books were chosen for investigation: Virginia woolf's To The Light House ; translated by Saleh Hosseini(1387), the second one, Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice ; translated by Nastaran Jamie(1372), and the third one, Hemingway's The Farwell to Arm translated by Najaf Daryabandari (1382). Marked themes were classified based on the Grzegorek's (1984) and Hallidiyan linguists' categories of marked themes which were: passivization, construction with predicated theme, constructions with fronted time and place adjunct, construction with fronted object and complement, identifying theme, constructions with fronted predicator, and Preposed expressions. To compare and contrast the obtained frequencies, Chi-square test was used to see, if differences are statistically significant or not. The study showed that in many structures, Persian was equivalent to English and differences were not significant. It concluded that because of linear arrangement differences between languages , translators should be aware of these devices to handel marked thematized constructions properly in translation.
