Chitosan-based hydrogel covalently anchored to cobalt phthalocyanine as an efficient catalyst for oxidation of mercaptans in an alkali free aqueous medium

The present paper describes the covalent immobilization of cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) to chitosan hydrogel via sulfonamide linkage.This novel chitosan-based hydrogel cross-linked with cobalt phthalocyanine corresponds to criteria of green chemistry and sustainable development: (i) using of support from inexpensive renewables; (ii) combination of basic and oxidation sites in one solid material to avoid an addition of external base or other additives resulting in no wastes and (iii) easy separation of catalyst from reaction mixture and possibility of recycling
