The Effects of Teaching Requests via Metapragmatic Instruction on Recognition of Similar Speech Acts

The present study attempted to find if teaching one specific speech act could cause improvement in recognizing other similar speech acts. The participants of this study were 26 EFL learners at lower-intermediate level of proficiency being homogenized by Oxford Placement Test (OPT). The speech act of requesting was instructed to 14 learners within eight sessions via metapragmatic instruction. Two other speech acts of suggesting and refusing which like requests are among face threatening speech acts were selected to be included in the pre- and post-test in order to investigate any possible effects of the treatment on them. The results revealed that teaching the speech act of requesting could help learners significantly improve in recognition of both suggestions and refusals.
