Charles Taylor’s Contribution to the Modern Self

Charles Taylor’s influential, widely read contribution (1964-2007) to the question of selfhood expands onto a wide range of issues to include ethics, linguistic, epistemology and philosophy. Taylor finds himself dissatisfied with the current understandings of human self, which ignore the important features of the self and which try to give a reductionist, objective account of the self. This study first give an overview of Taylor’s critique of the modern naturalistic reductionist theories and then sheds light on some of the most important aspects of Taylor’s thought in his study of the human self, including his theory of the self as a moral linguistic agent and a self-interpreting and dialogical subject
