Idioms in the Persian Translation of The Catcher in the Rye”

In the present study, efforts have been made to meet two objectives. Firstly, the researcher attempted to find the most frequent strategy in translation of idioms especially from English into Persian. The next was to explore the most appropriate strategy in the translation of idioms. Idioms and their equivalents were extracted from both English and Persian texts, and classified based on Baker's (2011) theory. The analysis of data revealed that the following strategies were used in translating of idioms (1 paraphrasing (59.34%) (2using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (31.87%) (3literal translation (5.49%) (4 omission (2.2%) (5 using an idiom of similar meaning and form (1.1%) Moreover, the results of the study led us to conclude that the ideal strategy of translating an idiom by using an idiom of target language which has similar meaning and form is not always possible. On the other hand, literal translation without considering its restrictions may lead to an awkward and vague translation. Then, the strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form can be an appropriate choice.
