Discourse and poetry translation (A Case Study of Poetic Discourse Markers Translation in Khayyam’s Quatrains)

Translation of poetry has long been a challenging issue and yet a touchstone for recognizing a skilled translator from the ordinary one. Due to the very delicate nature of translation particularly the poetry translation, there are so many angles that can be studied in this field. The present study aims at the role of poetry discourse markers in the translation of poetry to detect the best translation based on the discourse rules and also from the reader’s point of view. This paper has investigated different translations of the same quatrains Khayyam’s from 3 different translators, Edward Fitzgerald, E.H. Whinfield, and the third one to a shared translation Abbas and Mansour Ariyanpur. The result revealed that the images made by each translator has different characteristic based on the transference of discourse markers while one translation is more bound to creating the same image of the quatrain the other has attempted to domesticate the total theme
