Relationship between Language Learning Strategy Use and Gender in an EFL Context

چکیده مقاله:

This study intended to investigate language learning strategy differences among male and female learners’ achievement in learning a language. To this end, 111 adult language learners (50 males and 61females with intermediate level of proficiency) at Bostan Abad ,East Azarbaijan province participated in this study ,selected by taking the Oxford Proficiency test. The data were collected through Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990). The results of Independent-samples t-test indicated that there was no significant difference in scores for males(M=1.96 ,SD=1.45)and females(M=1.90,SD=1.06 ;t(109)= 0.24 ,p=0.009,two-tailed).The magnitude of the differences in the means(mean difference= 0.06 ,95 CI: -0.42to 0.54)was very small effect(eta squared=0.005). Based on the results obtained, there are not gender differences in language learning strategy use in EFL Learning. Results also revealed that all participants had used same language learning strategies for different English skills.The results of the study showed that there are not any differences among male and female language learning strategy use. This study may be beneficial to other researchers and pedagogical settings
