Application of multilevel STATCOM for reducing power loss in transmission lines

This paper presents a multilevel STATCOM that works in reactive power mode. This equipment can compensate reactive power that is conducted in transmission lines. Therefore, the apparent current will be decreased that will lead to the decrease in overall power dissipation. Unlike the capacitor banks, this equipment is a real time device and can compensate the reactive power continuously. Application of multilevel topologies leads to using this device in high voltage applications that is required in transmission lines. Simulations are done by MATLAB/Simulink to prove the application of the device for reducing power loss. Results show that this device can decrease the power loss by decreasing the apparent power.
