CuO-CeO2 nanocomposite catalyzed efficient synthesis of coumarin derivatives under solvent-free conditions

A new and efficient method for the synthesis of coumarin derivatives by the Pechmann reaction catalyzed by CuO-CeO2 nanocomposite under solvent-free conditions is reported. A variety of phenols reacted with ethyl acetoacetate or methyl acetoacetate to afforded the coumarin derivatives in good yieldes and short reaction times. The catalyst can be recovered by simple filtration and recycled up to 6 consecutive runs without any loss in its activity
