چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication associated with poor outcomes in patients with COVID-۱۹. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of AKI and investigate its related characteristics in deceased patients with COVID-۱۹. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on ۳۸۰ deceased patients with polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-۱۹, hospitalized at Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Qom City, Iran, in ۲۰۲۰. Data were extracted from medical records, and AKI was defined based on the criterion of an increase in serum creatinine ≥۰.۵ mg/dL or ≥۵۰% within ۴۸ hours. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version ۲۶, employing the chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The mean age of patients was ۶۵.۸۶ years, and ۵۸.۹% were male. The overall prevalence of AKI was ۳۵.۳% (۱۳۴ individuals). The mean serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels both at admission and at the time of death were significantly higher in the AKI group compared to the non-AKI group (P<۰.۰۰۱). The mean age of patients with AKI (۷۳.۶۶ years) was significantly higher than that of patients without AKI (۶۱.۶ years) (P<۰.۰۰۱), but no association was found between gender and the occurrence of AKI (P=۰.۱۲۶). Conclusion: The findings indicate a significant prevalence of AKI among deceased COVID-۱۹ patients, which is associated with older age and higher levels of serum creatinine and urea. This highlights the necessity for meticulous monitoring of kidney function, particularly in older patients and those with underlying conditions, during hospitalization to optimize management and improve outcomes.
