چکیده مقاله:

Biogas production through the anaerobic co-digestion of cattle manure and sugarcane bagasse represents a sustainable approach for waste management and renewable energy generation in Iran. The present study aimed to optimize the operational conditions of the co-digestion process by simultaneously investigating the effects of temperature (۳۰, ۳۵, and ۴۰°C), total solids content (TS of ۴%, ۵%, and ۶%), and bagasse-to-cattle manure mixing ratios (۷۰:۳۰, ۸۰:۲۰, and ۹۰:۱۰ on a wet weight basis). Experiments were designed using the Box–Behnken approach within the framework of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and conducted in batch reactors with a working volume of ۲۰۰ mL. Physicochemical properties of the substrates, including moisture content, total solids, volatile solids, ash, carbon, and nitrogen contents, were determined, and the initial pH was adjusted to ۷.۵. The results indicated that the optimum operating conditions were achieved at ۴۰°C, ۵% TS, and a mixing ratio of ۹۰:۱۰ (bagasse:cattle manure), resulting in a cumulative biogas production of ۲۵۵۰ mL after ۳۵ days of digestion. This yield was approximately ۷۵% higher than that obtained under the least favorable conditions (۱۴۳۴ mL). The improved performance under optimal conditions was attributed to a more suitable C/N ratio, enhanced microbial activity, and reduced mass transfer limitations. These findings demonstrate the considerable potential of sugarcane bagasse and cattle manure co-digestion for sustainable waste management and renewable energy production at the local scale.
