The Role of Maternal Care Guides and Record Cards in Preventing Pregnancy Emergencies: A Systematic Review

Pregnancy emergencies are among the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Improving pregnant women’s awareness of danger signs and promoting health-seeking behaviors are essential strategies for reducing pregnancy-related complications. This study aimed to examine the role of maternal care guides and record cards in preventing pregnancy emergencies and improving maternal health outcomes. A systematic review was conducted on studies investigating maternal care guides, record cards, and maternal and child health (MCH) handbooks. After literature searching, screening, and eligibility assessment according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, ۱۰ studies were included. Data were extracted and synthesized using a descriptive approach. The findings indicated that these tools improved women’s knowledge of pregnancy danger signs, enhanced health-seeking behaviors, increased attendance at antenatal care visits, strengthened communication with healthcare providers, and facilitated early identification of pregnancy complications. Several studies also reported improvements in birth preparedness, continuity of care, and utilization of skilled healthcare services. However, some studies found no significant improvement in maternal knowledge. Maternal care guides and record cards are effective tools for promoting maternal health and preventing pregnancy emergencies. Their broader implementation, particularly through digital platforms, may contribute to reducing maternal complications and mortality.
