چکیده مقاله:
Given the energy crisis and climate change, revisiting climate-responsive architectural strategies has become increasingly important. Among these, responsive envelopes play a vital role as key components in managing the exchange of energy between a building's interior and exterior. In traditional Iranian architecture, passive elements such as windcatchers, lattice screens, canopies, and verandas offered intelligent responses to the country's diverse climatic conditions. Today, with the advancement of digital technologies and intelligent structures, kinetic or dynamic façades have emerged as innovative solutions to respond to environmental factors such as light, heat, and ventilation. Despite numerous studies on the efficiency of contemporary intelligent envelopes and documentation of traditional climatic elements, there is a clear gap in the research literature regarding the comparative analysis of these two approaches and the potential for leveraging traditional knowledge in contemporary design. In fact, the connection between vernacular design principles and modern responsive façade technologies has not been adequately reinterpreted. This article aims to provide an analytical review of the concepts, technologies, and functions of responsive envelopes in both the context of traditional Iranian architecture and global contemporary examples, with a focus on climatic considerations. The research method is qualitative, based on document analysis and comparative review of academic sources and selected case studies. Findings from the literature review indicate that many traditional solutions particularly in the areas of shading, natural ventilation, and light filtration can be reinterpreted and reimagined using contemporary technologies. This reinterpretation can guide the development of sustainable, locally rooted architecture by harnessing technological capacities without disconnecting from historical and cultural identity.
