Digital Overuse and Family Dynamics: A Meta-Analysis of Systemic Interventions for Internet Addiction in Families

The rapid digitalization of modern society has led to an unprecedented increase in problematic internet use, commonly referred to as internet addiction (IA). This meta-analysis systematically evaluates the efficacy of systemic family-based interventions in mitigating IA symptoms and improving family dynamics. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search of ۱۴ databases (including Google Scholar, PubMed, and SID) was conducted for studies published between ۲۰۲۰ and ۲۰۲۵, with inclusion of seminal works from ۲۰۱۰ onwards. A total of ۱۸ randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs were analyzed. Results indicate that systemic interventions significantly reduce IA severity (SMD =-۱.۴۳, ۹۵% CI [-۲.۱۹, -۰.۶۷]) and enhance family functioning (SMD = -۱.۲۵). Subgroup analysis revealed that combined therapies (medication plus family therapy) yielded the highest effect sizes. The findings underscore the critical role of family-level dynamics in both the etiology and treatment of digital overuse.
