Nanocellulose, as a natural, biocompatible, renewable, and biodegradable nanomaterial, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the mechanical, thermal, and biological properties of starch-based composites due to its exceptional mechanical strength, high surface-to-volume ratio, and surface modification capability. This comprehensive review paper examines in depth the mechanisms of reinforcement, technological advances in the production and modification of nanocellulose, and its wide-ranging applications across industries. The focus is on providing quantitative and qualitative data from recent research and precisely elucidating nanocellulose's impact mechanisms on starch composite performance.
