The widespread use of plastics in packaging industries and their conversion into non-renewable waste have created fundamental environmental problems for both humans and wildlife. This has prompted researchers and manufacturers to seek environmentally friendly and economically viable alternative materials. One of the most promising alternatives for plastic packaging is the production of low-cost starch-based biopolymer films reinforced with cellulose, which has attracted significant attention in the packaging industry and is rapidly developing. Starch, as a biological and biodegradable polymer, is one of the most important natural polysaccharides found in plants as an energy storage source. Due to its amorphous structure and high hydrophilicity, this polymer exhibits poor mechanical properties, which limits the application of pure starch. Cellulose is a linear polysaccharide composed of glucose units with a highly crystalline structure and exceptional mechanical strength. When combined with starch, cellulose significantly improves the mechanical properties of the composite material. The combination of starch and cellulose as bio-based raw materials serves as a suitable alternative to petroleum-based plastics due to its high biodegradability, helping to reduce plastic pollution. Additionally, the incorporation of cellulose into starch enhances mechanical strength, elastic modulus, and thermal stability while reducing the application limitations of pure starch. This article reviews the recent advances, challenges, and applications of starch-cellulose blends in polymer industries.
