Ship hull coloration is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of marine ecological processes with global implications. This review presents a comprehensive synthesis of international research investigating the multifaceted ecological consequences of ship hull color. We analyze how different hull colors, characterized by specific spectral reflectance properties, selectively influence the settlement and community composition of biofouling organisms, thereby affecting the dispersal of non-native species across biogeographic regions. Furthermore, we quantify the impact of hull color-mediated heat absorption on localized sea surface temperatures, considering the potential for thermal stress on sensitive marine organisms in coastal habitats worldwide. The review also examines the effects of reflected light from colored hulls on phytoplankton productivity and the structure of pelagic food webs, utilizing remote sensing data and in situ measurements. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for international collaboration in developing and implementing environmentally sustainable hull coating technologies, including spectrally-tuned antifouling coatings and bio-inspired surface designs, to minimize the ecological footprint of the global shipping industry.
