Drought: A climate change threat to environmental stability and biodiversity (A comprehensive review)

The increasing prevalence of climate change has led to catastrophic disruptions to ecosystems worldwide, with drought being one of the worst threats to international biodiversity and ecosystem stability. This study examined ۳۵ articles published in English between ۲۰۱۹ and ۲۰۲۵ on the topic of drought: a climate change threat to environmental stability and biodiversity, using three databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus) and the search engine (Google Scholar). The paper examines the various consequences of prolonged water scarcity, such as habitat destruction, species loss, altered ecosystem processes, and increased vulnerability to additional stressors such as fires and diseases, leading to catastrophic ecological deterioration. Furthermore, it examines the destabilizing effects of drought on the environment, for example, soil erosion, disruption of local and global water cycles, and the resulting loss of essential ecosystem services, from water purification to carbon sequestration. By defining the role of climate change in increasing drought, this abstract emphasizes the need for mitigation measures, sustainable water management, and ecological restoration to maintain biodiversity and achieve long-term environmental resilience. It is only through such collaborative efforts that we can preserve Earth's invaluable biodiversity and ensure the planet's long-term ecological resilience in an increasingly arid future.
