چکیده مقاله:
The legacy of Modernist architecture, characterized by its emphasis on industrial materiality, functionalism, and universal aesthetics, is increasingly being interrogated in the context of the ۲۱st-century environmental crisis. While the “machine for living” paradigm once symbolized progress, many Modernist structures are now criticized for their high energy consumption and lack of climatic responsiveness. This research aims to re-evaluate the core principles of Modernism—such as transparency, open floor plans, and technological optimism—through the lens of contemporary sustainability. Through a qualitative analysis of iconic Modernist frameworks and their environmental performance, this study explores how these principles can be reconciled with modern ecological imperatives. The concepts of “Adaptive Reuse” and “Climate-Responsive Modernism” are examined as strategic pathways for retrofitting existing Modernist heritage and informing new designs. The findings suggest that the fundamental Modernist ethos of “form follows function” can be successfully redefined to encompass ecological functionality. Ultimately, it is argued that by integrating passive design strategies and advanced green technologies into the Modernist vocabulary, a synergistic relationship between architectural heritage and environmental stewardship can be established, ensuring the relevance of Modernism in a carbon-constrained future.
