Digital Literacy Revisited: Prompt Engineering as an Emerging Competency in Generative AI-Enhanced Language Learning

The pervasive integration of generative artificial intelligence compels a fundamental reconceptualization of Digital Literacy. This paper, "Digital Literacy Revisited," investigates Prompt Engineering as a critical emerging competency essential for effective engagement with AI-enhanced language learning environments. As AI tools increasingly permeate language education, the capacity to craft nuanced and effective prompts-essentially, to "speak" to AI-becomes paramount. This study synthesizes current scholarship on digital literacy and second language acquisition, defining Prompt Engineering and articulating its pedagogical significance in optimizing language learning outcomes. It further examines the challenges and opportunities for integrating this competency into curricula. Our aim is to propose an expanded understanding of digital literacy, positioning Prompt Engineering as a core skill for navigating and leveraging AI in contemporary and future language learning contexts.
