چکیده مقاله:

Linguists, from Fries (۱۹۵۳) to contemporary researchers like Uribe and Schwartz (۲۰۲۵), emphasize utilizing cross-linguistic similarities to enhance language acquisition. Contrastive analysis-comparing L۱ and L۲ structures—serves as a vital pedagogical tool, suggesting that teacher training should include such systematic comparisons. Given that bilingualism is a global norm (Bialystok, ۲۰۲۰), leveraging a learner's background knowledge remains essential. Central to this approach are cognates-words with shared forms and meanings across languages. While false cognates pose challenges, true cognates effectively improve vocabulary development and reading comprehension (Ringbom, ۲۰۲۲; Antoniou et al., ۲۰۲۲). Grounded in Ausubel's (۱۹۶۸) principle that prior knowledge determines learning, this research explores the impact of English-Kurdish cognates on creative reading comprehension. By using L۱ as a bridge to master the L۲ system, educators can better facilitate linguistic proficiency and understanding.
