Analysis of Form and Content of Values Education in TEYL Materials: The Case of Family and Friends Starter

Instructional materials in general and textbooks in particular are not value-free. Values are either explicitly or implicitly incorporated and taught in/through them. Materials especially aiming at young learners are prone to values integration and seek to include a select set of them. To help illustrate how a values education in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) textbook might play out, the form and content of one such notable international publication, namely Family and Friends Starter textbook, was held to critical scrutiny in this case study. The analysis showed, among other things, that values were part of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), where linguistic constructions served as carriers of values in language education. Furthermore, a content analysis of the data revealed that values of a more social nature, most notably respecting and loving others as well as sharing with others, were the most salient ones in the said textbook.
