Teachers' Experiences of Using Artificial Intelligence in Open and Distance Learning: Evidence from Payame Noor University

Artificial intelligence has increasingly transformed higher education, particularly in open and distance learning environments where digital technologies mediate teaching and learning processes. This study investigates teachers' experiences of integrating artificial intelligence tools into distance education at Payame Noor University in Isfahan. A descriptive research design was employed using a structured questionnaire completed by ۸۵ faculty members with prior experience using artificial intelligence in teaching. The findings indicate that teachers generally perceive artificial intelligence as a supportive instructional resource that enhances efficiency, facilitates student engagement, and enables more flexible learning pathways. However, participants also reported challenges including limited institutional training, ethical concerns, and uncertainty regarding long-term professional implications. The results further suggest a gradual shift in teachers' roles toward facilitation and academic mentoring rather than traditional content delivery. The study highlights the importance of institutional support, professional development, and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible and effective integration of artificial intelligence in open and distance learning environments.
