Exploring the Relationship Between the Human Soul and Body in African-Yoruba Philosophy and Transcendental Wisdom: A Comparative Analysis

This research paper examines the soul-body relationship between Yoruba Philosophy and Transcendental Wisdom. It utilizes library research and comparative analysis to reveal insights into how each tradition conceptualizes this relationship. Yoruba Philosophy perceives humans as a duality of body and soul, emphasizing their interconnected yet distinct existence. Essentially, the body and soul were not created simultaneously; rather, the body preceded the soul. In contrast, Transcendental Wisdom introduces principles such as the primacy of existence and the substantial motion of the soul, presenting the connection between soul and body as a significant bond. This perspective implies that while humans are materially linked, they embody a hierarchical truth that prioritizes spiritual purity over materiality. Furthermore, the findings of this research paper indicate that both schools share common ground on certain aspects of the relationship between the human soul and body, including the method of inquiry, the soul as an independent entity, philosophical foundations, and concepts of afterlife and continuity. However, the differences arise from their emergence of the human body and soul, the dualism of soul and body, and the approaches they adopt.
