چکیده مقاله:

The rapid expansion of aquaculture is essential for meeting the growing global demand for aquatic food products, yet it has intensified critical challenges, including disease outbreaks, environmental sustainability concerns, and excessive use of synthetic chemicals and antibiotics. Intensive farming practices, such as high stocking densities and stressful rearing conditions, often increase the susceptibility of aquatic organisms to infectious diseases. To manage these outbreaks, antibiotics and chemical therapeutants are commonly used, raising concerns about environmental contamination, antimicrobial resistance, and the accumulation of drug residues in aquaculture products. These challenges highlight the urgent need for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to conventional disease management strategies. Herbal extracts and essential oils derived from medicinal plants have recently gained attention as natural health-promoting agents in aquaculture. These plant-based products are rich in bioactive secondary metabolites, including phenolics, flavonoids, terpenes, and alkaloids, which confer diverse biological activities. Studies have shown that herbal extracts and essential oils possess antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory properties, making them effective for improving fish health and resilience. When added to aquafeeds or applied directly to rearing water, these natural compounds can enhance growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, digestive enzyme activity, and overall physiological condition in various cultured fish and shellfish species. They also strengthen innate and adaptive immune responses, increasing resistance to bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections, and reducing dependence on antibiotics. This contributes to safer aquaculture products and lowers the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, some herbal extracts and essential oils improve water quality by suppressing pathogenic microorganisms and supporting balanced microbial ecosystems. Despite their promising potential, challenges remain for widespread application, including determining optimal dosages, ensuring stability during feed processing and storage, enhancing bioavailability, selecting appropriate application methods, and addressing species-specific responses. This research has focused on supporting the safe, standardized, and effective integration of herbal extracts and essential oils into modern, sustainable aquaculture practices, particularly in regions such as Iran.
