Understanding Public Perception towards the Functions and Benefits of Wetland Ecosystems

Wetlands are recognized as highly productive and valuable ecosystems and are known as important parts of urban natural open spaces. This study investigates the influence of socio-demographic factors on public preferences for Ghori Gol wetland in Eastern Azerbaijan province, Iran. A simple rating methodology was used in the choice was made based on a ۵-point Likert scale and descriptions of ۲۰۰ visitors of the wetland. Eight dimensions namely unsafe feeling, enjoyment of nature, organic production, ecological balance, environmental impact, ecosystem protection, nature appreciation, and active activities dimensions emerged through the factor analysis. Besides, the effect of gender, age groups, income, and education status on public preference was examined. The results of the statistical analysis show that there is no statistically significant difference between gender groups towards function and benefits dimensions of the wetland. In addition, income, age groups, and education status had a significantly different effect on people preferences toward the eight dimensions in wetland preferences.
