Cognitive decline in dementia

Background and Aim: Dementia is a syndrome characterized by progressive cognitive decline and various diseases and affect brain functions and structures. The prevalence of dementia is ۴.۷% in people over ۶۰ years of age. Cognitive impairment affects all the aspects of an individual's life quality. It is important to diagnose the cognitive impairment in early stages in order to prevent damage to life quality since the accurate identification of cognitive decline helps the therapist to be more careful in their treatment programs. So in this research we study the kind of cognitive decline in dementia. Methods: This article is a review on researches published from ۲۰۰۳ until ۲۰۱۸ in Elsevier, PubMed and Google Scholar databases as well as searches of library resources. The studies on dementia, communication disorders, and cognitive disorders were used to do this research. Results: The study of cognitive decline in dementia: Conclusion Results The results of the present study showed that cognitive decline includes attention deficit, decline of information processing, episodic memory deficits, working memory deficits, family and friend's name retrieval deficits, acquisition and retrieval of new information, deficits in reasoning and practice. Discussion In general, people with dementia experience the gradual loss of memory and other cognitive functions as the disease progresses that these symptoms vary depending on original pathology and individual differences, so it is necessary for the specialists associated with this group of patients to consider such disorders in their treatment program and provide appropriate treatment plans.
