Numerical investigation of exhaust gas recirculation for a gas turbine combustion chamber under partial load

For decades, excess air has been used to dilute exhaust emissions and reduce peak combustion temperatures. More recently, Exhaust Gas Recirculation has emerged as a promising strategy to lower peak temperatures and NOx emissions. Although Exhaust Gas Recirculation has been applied in boiler systems, its broader adoption in gas turbines has been limited by moisture and other exhaust gas components. Recent studies suggest that, with proper processing — such as moisture separation or filtration — this method can be integrated into gas turbine cycles. Building on prior research, this study investigates Exhaust Gas Recirculation under partial load conditions, particularly in the context of carbon capture.  Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of a sample - designed combustion chamber, thermal and environmental impacts are analyzed. Results show that peak combustion temperatures can be reduced by up to ۲۵%, while Pattern Factor as a measure of outlet temperature uniformity varies slightly. Changes in combustion product composition lead to moderate reductions in average outlet temperature. These findings support EGR’s potential to enhance combustion efficiency and environmental performance in sustainable energy systems.
