چکیده مقاله:

Educational buildings in hot and dry climates, particularly governmental schools in Iran, often face high energy consumption due to the poor thermal performance of large, flat roofs exposed to intense solar radiation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of various cool roof technologies—such as white coatings, reflective membranes, and green roofs—in reducing heat gain and improving indoor comfort under these conditions. A comparative approach, combining international case studies, experimental measurements, and simulation analyses, was used to examine thermophysical properties, reflectance rates, and seasonal performance. Factors such as solar incidence, surface color, material emissivity, and local climate patterns were also considered. Results show that reflective materials can reduce roof surface temperatures by up to ۲۰ °C in summer compared to dark roofs, leading to ۷–۱۵% cooling energy savings and improved thermal comfort for students and staff. In transitional seasons, cool roofs help minimize overheating without causing winter discomfort when paired with proper insulation and passive heating strategies. Beyond direct energy benefits, cool roofs mitigate urban heat island effects, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and extend roof lifespan by reducing thermal stress, thereby cutting maintenance costs. Based on performance data and cost-benefit analysis, high-reflectivity, durable, and low-maintenance coatings are recommended as a practical and economical solution for large-scale upgrades in Iranian educational infrastructure, contributing to sustainable architecture and national energy efficiency goals.
